1980s Revival

Take one cliff-top property with panoramic views of the water from every possible angle, add in the vision of the owners and architect Scott Jury, the craftsmanship of Haris Goodwin and you have the Kiwi dream.

Maximising the ocean artistry was the brief for this 1980s brick renovation and with the flick of the lock on the large stacker doors to the main deck, the outdoors comes barrelling in.

Either side of this, architectural sliders lead to alfresco platforms and if you’re feeling indulgent, automatic louvres, bi fold and sliding windows surround you.

The dependence on glass is shameless and light surges in from the top light windows to showcase what is – of all the titivating tweaks – regarded as the most striking feature of the home.

The ‘boat hull’ ceiling in the kitchen, inverted with tongue and groove cedar and led with copper edging complements the high raking ceiling and defines the open plan areas.

Coming home is just as inviting as being home and the precast concrete columns that stand sentry to splice the convex windows at the front entrance contrast fluently with the shiplap cedar cladding and copper detailing.

The theme continues around the exterior with hard to miss diamond-shaped pillars shelled with cedar and racking fins that complete the grand architectural look.

Renovations of this magnitude invariably come with their own unique challenges and in collaboration with engineers, Goodwin and Jury made light work of these to make the adjustments fit the client’s vision.
