Steel may be excluded from overseas building products changes

A steel sector boss says fabricated steel is likely to be left out of plans to allow overseas substitution of locally approved building products.

The Government proposes changing the Building Act to allow automatic approval of imported products that meet relevant standards elsewhere in the world, thereby helping to cut building costs.

Wayne Carson, managing director of west Auckland-based D&H Steel Construction, has told the Minister for Regulation David Seymour and other politicians that fabricated structural steel should be exempt.
