Waikato builders up skill young and old

Earlier this year Certified Builders Waikato held their regional New Zealand Carpentry Challenge, four young carpentry apprentices where given a set of plans and had 8 hours to build a fort each, the eventual winner Jordon Tira represented the Waikato region at the Carpentry Challenge finals held in May at New Zealand Certified Builders National Conference.

As a result of this carpentry challenge, these forts were then donated to preschools around the Waikato. “because learning through play is important to the development of children, it was an easy choice to gift these forts to worthy preschools. In addition, we also gave them hammers and small sections of timber, for the little ones to further develop their eye hand coordination” said Mike Hayward NZCB Waikato President.

These tools and timber came as a result of a day of Licensed Builder Practitioner [LBP] training. Held in conjunction with ITM, practitioners gained 6 elective points, on site learning as well as 5 past editions of Codewords covering off the LBP’s compulsory aspects of skills maintenance.

“A big thank you to Regional Partner Monier Roofing for helping us out deliver the on the job leaning, which involved practitioners working out timber fascia heights for concrete tiles. We then had them fixing a section of fascia in place. Some LBP’s had to think a little harder as we threw in the scenario of a ponding board” said Mike.

“It was very satisfying encouraging carpentry skills in our community from pre-schoolers and apprentices through to seasoned LBP’s. I wish to thank my coordinator Natalie O’Donnell and the Waikato committee for their ongoing support with these events”, said Mike.
