In the News: $11k not enough to lure NZ tradies west – lifestyle matters too

BusinessDesk reports that the Western Australian Government has approved relocation payments for 14 skilled New Zealand workers under its ‘Build a Life in Western Australia’ scheme, aimed at attracting tradies to help meet housing demand.

The programme offers up to A$10,000 (NZ$11,000) in incentives to building and construction professionals who secure work and remain employed in WA for at least six months.
But NZCB Chief Executive Malcolm Fleming says the decision to move overseas involves more than just money.

“There’s a range of reasons that people go overseas… We certainly wish that they’d come back to us with that experience down the track.”

Fleming noted that a slowdown in New Zealand’s national infrastructure pipeline is contributing to the outflow of skilled workers, but he questioned the strength of the financial incentive on offer.

“$11,000 was not much money, and the WA climate is not for everyone.”

The article also referenced recent findings from the Waihanga Ara Rau Workforce Development Council, which suggest that while Australia may appeal to early-career professionals without dependents, the benefits tend to diminish over time—particularly when factoring in house prices and lifestyle considerations.
