ADNZ Student Design Chosen for 2026 NZCB Apprentice Challenge

We are proud to continue our collaboration with Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) for the 2026 Apprentice Challenge. The NZCB Apprentice Challenge is delivered in partnership with BCITO and Mitre 10 Trade.

This collaboration brings design and construction together, giving ADNZ students the chance to combine creativity with practical, real-world application. It’s a platform for emerging designers to showcase their ideas, see their concepts built at scale, and contribute to projects that support local communities.

For 2026, ADNZ students were invited to design a Pātaka – a community sharing cupboard that can serve as a hub for books, toys, food, or other locally driven needs. Their concepts were developed in response to a detailed brief provided by NZCB, with the top design set to become the blueprint for apprentices nationwide.

We’re excited to announce that Matt Brown has been selected as the ADNZ student designer for the 2026 NZCB Apprentice Challenge.

Matt is studying towards a Bachelor of Architectural Studies. His Pātaka design will be built by apprentices at regional heats and gifted to communities across New Zealand.

Entries for the 2026 NZCB Apprentice Challenge open on 27 January, and the regional heats will take place at locations across the country on 18 April.
