Country calm

Moving from the North Island to take up a job at the local school in Geraldine was exciting in itself – but the chance to design a new home was icing on the cake for the owners of this 222sqm property. When a fellow teacher gave builder Ryan Neutze the big tick for his collaborative approach, the rapport was instant.

The land, part of a sub-division sliced off a farm, had rolling hills as a backdrop. All very pretty, but not very practical. As Ryan explains: “The site had 1.8 metres of fall across its width, so the first challenge was to shore it up on two sides.”

With timber retaining on the eastern aspect and a rock wall to the west, along with suitable drainage to ensure no watery woes lay ahead, the RN Building team got to work.

The owners were keen to make a statement and that started with black brick teamed with red ironbark cladding, brought in from Australia. The ruddy timber is laid vertically to contrast the fine horizontal brick. On the front face of the H-shaped home, it highlights a gable, while pergola posts form a walkway to lend a ceremonial sense of arrival.

Once inside, a kind of country calm settles on the living spaces. Cathedral scissor trusses expand the volume, barn-style doors pick up the rural theme and the kitchen, with Shaker-profile cabinetry, hits a classic/modern note. V-groove details in grey blue on the built-in fireplace and island bench push in personality, while full-height windows connect it to the great outdoors.

Ryan worked with the architect on the proportions of the three-bedroom home, replanning areas to keep within budget. “The clients initially imagined a kitchen with a full-width pantry, which added unnecessary metres to the plan, so we positioned a smaller one off to the side,” he explains.

Not that this feels like compromise. There are many touches of luxury: a media room, study nook, main bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and ensuite – plus storage galore, including a family-sized linen cupboard and a sports room for grown-ups behind the garage. “One of the owners is a keen hunter and couldn’t wait to explore the area,” says Ryan.

Sadly, that was not to be. Just as the build began, a principal’s post came up back in the North Island. No more surprises, though. The beautifully resolved house was snapped up a couple of weeks later.
