Taranaki heaven

When you’re building for your former schoolteacher and rugby coach, the goalposts are very clear. Nick Childs of New Style Homes appreciated the easy-flow and honest design conversations he had with his clients before construction began. He enjoyed the banter between owners and tradies during the job. And, now that the five-bedroom home is resplendent on the land, he loves it when he’s invited back to chew the fat over coffee or a beer.

Set on 10 hectares of a former dairy farm, where verdant paddocks stretch to the horizon, this home is heaven for active retirees. Built into a small hill with an elevated view, the single level design spreads over 383 square metres and is thoughtfully positioned to put Mt. Taranaki in the frame to the west, with Mt. Ruapehu to the north-east.

The location of the pool – a slender slash of blue amidst the greenery – was equally considered. It runs at right angles to the main body of the home, offset to one side so as not to obstruct the mountain vista.

James Hardie board-and-batten cladding in Flaxpod, and roofing in the same colour, combine to give the gabled forms a monolithic presence in the landscape – a strong, geometric statement. Building on a hill in the middle of winter, where a stiff breeze was a regular visitor, came with its challenges. Downtime did not mean delay. New Style Homes crafted their own frames in the workshop, and their exacting workmanship ensured millimetre-perfect precision where windows met battens, for a beautifully composed, confident exterior.

Inside, the contrast of white-meets-white finishes has an expansive effect that carries through three separate pavilions – one for living, one for sleeping and one a guest wing for when family comes to stay. Pale timber floors ground the interiors in effortless style.

Skylights above the kitchen allow in even more light and an extra-long benchtop, with sink positioned to one side, means plenty of room to pull up a barstool for when children and grandchildren are visiting. A laundry and garage tucked in behind tick the box for practicality.

Within the minimalist framework, artworks inject colour but play back-up to the natural attributes of this special site as picture windows draw a crisp edge around the rural tableau and the region’s most famous mountain.

A 12-month build has delivered a haven of peace and generosity. The owners, who relocated from a typical farmhouse, can’t believe how warm and quiet their new digs are – until the family tumbles in. A project that began with high expectations, has finished with even higher praise.
