Twin peaks

When it comes to making an entrance, this house takes the concept to a whole new level. A contemporary colonnade between two gabled wings sets the standard high from the outset. It’s a rhythmical journey to the front door, which opens to the breathtaking grandeur of Mt. Taranaki – a living landscape framed by a perfectly positioned corner stacker.

Builder Nick Childs had known the family since he was at school, so sitting down with the owners – a couple with four adult children – was a true meeting of minds. What started as a blank canvas on a slice of land that was once a dairy farm, became a home shaped by robust views (both physical and philosophical).

Shaping a floorplan around the needs of an active household, while taking advantage of the iconic backdrop naturally lent itself to an H-shaped footprint, with gabled pavilions – not quite what the clients initially had in mind. To get to go, a close friend of the client and New Style Homes crafted a wooden model of the proposed home and, a few string lines and on-the-ground deliberations later, the plan was agreed.

Close collaboration has reaped rewards in a generous and personality-filled sanctuary that makes a statement inside and out. The 368sqm home is elegantly modern on its elevated site. There’s a lovely symmetry to the front-facing gable ends. Red-brick cladding pops against dark-toned mortar chosen to tie in with the colour of the vertical weatherboard and long-run roofing.

Step into the living wing and the volume is instantly impressive. Vaulted ceilings team with polished-concrete floors to hold a palette rich in texture and colour. The kitchen island and splashback, draped in forest-green quartzite from Brazil, deliver movement to the scheme. Cabinetry in warm oak is a calm counterpoint.

Across the entrance link in the bedroom wing, this same oak is repeated in bathroom vanities, and the walk-in wardrobe of the main bedroom, lending cohesion between zones. Bold-veined floor-to-ceiling marble in the ensuite may vie for the limelight but future planning with a wide, walk-in shower and easy access spaces deserve equal status.

It’s no surprise given the picturesque backdrop that outdoor living has been carefully considered. Evenings on the sheltered west-facing patio, accessed from both living and sleeping quarters, are a given. But there’s something extra to be discovered. Relaxing in the sun nook, which projects from the living zone, provides a double dose of the wow factor. Mt. Taranaki on one side, Mt. Ruapehu on the other. Doesn’t get much better than that.
