Our members' projects in Christchurch
Material masterclass
Cashmere | Christchurch
This architectural home in Cashmere, Christchurch, brings together natural materials, contemporary design, and a strong connection to the outdoors.
Working with RBA, the homeowners refined every detail before R&B Build director Brett Armstrong delivered a spacious two-level home on a compact site.
A striking mix of claddings, including recycled brick and ALPOLIC® panels, gives the home its distinctive street presence. Inside, a water feature anchors the layout and enhances the sense of calm. The ground floor master suite ensures long-term practicality, while bespoke details, from the curved kitchen island to the floating bamboo staircase, complete the thoughtful design.
Redcliffs masterpiece
Christchurch
The owners of this Redcliffs home saw its potential and worked with Ashley Andrews of AO Builders to reimagine the 2012 architecturally designed property.
With no ability to extend, the project became a full interior and exterior refurbishment. A major highlight is the engineered steel spiral staircase that replaces the unsafe original, requiring extensive structural work to support its weight. The renovated kitchen, living areas, and bathrooms feature high end finishes, while the reconfigured master suite now includes a Juliet balustrade with sweeping views.
The result is a refined, contemporary family home that reflects the owners’ vision.
Passive perfection
Rangiora | Canterbury
When Chatterton Builders completed their modern Rangiora show home, the plan was to open it to the public for six months. COVID-19 changed that, and director Brent Chatterton moved in, giving him first hand experience living in a certified Passive house.
Built with structural insulated panels, the 265m² home delivers exceptional thermal comfort, airtightness, and clean, filtered air through a heat recovery system. Warm natural materials, from cedar cladding to a eucalyptus ceiling, add character throughout.
Brent says Passive construction costs more upfront but offers long-term savings on running costs along with healthier, more consistent indoor living conditions.
FAQs
What's the difference between an NZCB member and a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP)?
A Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) is a builder who has met the minimum industry requirements to carry out restricted building work. This includes completing a National Certificate in Carpentry Level 4, gaining practical experience, passing a written assessment, and holding a current licence with the Building Practitioners Board.
An NZCB member goes a step further. They must already be a qualified builder, but they also go through additional checks, including verified qualifications, references, workmanship history, and financial and professional vetting. NZCB members are expected to uphold higher standards of quality and conduct, and they can offer the Halo 10 Year Residential Guarantee.
In short:
LBPs meet the legal requirements to carry out restricted building work.
NZCB members meet higher industry standards and offer added peace of mind through thorough vetting and access to the Halo Guarantee.
Do NZCB builders offer guarantees on their work?
Yes. NZCB members can provide the Halo 10 Year Residential Guarantee, which protects you from the moment your project begins through to long after completion.
