In the News: Get in early to book your builder

Falling interest rates are prompting a surge in new building projects, with more than 9,000 new homes consented in the past quarter, slightly up from the same quarter last year.

NZCB Chief Executive Malcolm Fleming told Newstalk ZB that people needed to make sure they book their builders well in advance if they’re thinking of getting work done on their house.

“Right now, many of the best trade-qualified builders in the country have openings, but it won’t stay that way.

“We’re predicting it will pick up early next year as interest rates drop, and by mid-year, it’ll be difficult to find a good builder who can start right away.

“Ideally, a builder wants to have a pipeline of work for the next 6-12 months. When you’re dealing with that timeline, it’s best to contact your builder early.”

Fleming says when demand ramps up and big projects are on offer, it will become a lot harder to get a builder in for smaller jobs around the house.

“Now is a fantastic time to get a builder in for that kitchen refit, or just to check on the insulation issues you noticed over winter.

“That’ll be easy enough to do now, but as builders get tied up in bigger projects over the next 12 months, it’ll become a lot harder.”
