In the News: Gateway training a major advantage for students in the workplace

Teenagers who secure work experience during school get a major headstart on their counterparts when it comes to improving their employment prospects.

A Ministry of Education report shows that gaining trade and workplace experience increases the chance of employment by age 20.

According to NZCB chief executive Malcolm Fleming, employers in the current market employers are very selective about who they take on, and the more work experience students have when it comes to applying for a job, the better.

“Gateway training is vital for both employers and students, it provides students with hands on practical knowledge before they enter the workforce.

“It provides employers with further experience training students and supporting them to gain valuable experience.

“An apprenticeship is about more than just the practical skills, they also need to learn how to be good business people and how to work effectively in a workplace. Gateway training provides that.”
