In the News: Construction leads the way in Q2 GDP

New GDP figures have been released, suggesting there is an uptick in building and construction work.

Overall, the economy grew only 0.2% in the June quarter, however, the construction sector experienced the largest growth with and increase of 2.7%.

Malcolm Fleming says the data confirms what NZCB has been hearing from its members throughout the year.

“They’re faring pretty well considering the very challenging economic conditions of the past few years.

“Our SME builder members are resilient and can adapt to changes in the market. The Iran War for example created more uncertainty and some pressure on costs and supply chains. But our members have been able to adapt and pivot to new work.

“We’re optimistic about the year ahead. Consumer confidence is showing some signs of bouncing back but it’s still a very challenging market. For example, interest rates appear to be on an upward trajectory and that may hinder consumer spending.
