In the News: New home consents pass 40,000

Annual new home consents have passed 40,000, the highest annual level in three years. It’s a significant turnaround after a long downturn.

Malcolm Fleming welcomed the figures as further evidence of returning confidence in the building sector.

“We’ve been hearing from our members for a while now that work is starting to pick up around the country. They’re skilled builders qualified to take on a variety of work, which has helped them get through some tough economic times over the past year or two.

“This is just one data point among many but it does suggest we may have got through the worst of the economic downturn and that the sector is starting to gain some momentum.”
