In the News: NZCB speaks up for local builders on school builds

In July, the Ministry of Education floated a big change to how it delivers major school building projects, moving from around 190 suppliers to “a smaller group”.

NZCB Chief Executive Malcolm Fleming told RNZ the change could shut most builders out: 190 builders can currently bid for around 270 Ministry projects a year, and under the proposal that would fall to nine to fifteen. He also warned that the Ministry could end up paying a “double margin” on work passed down to smaller local builders.

Several weeks later, BusinessDesk reported that the Ministry had backed off the idea of slashing contractor numbers because of opposition from NZCB and local builders.
